Psychologist may see all ages and types of issues in fact that is how I started out. However, I quickly discovered over time that I would rather become more of an expert in certain areas than others and focusing my training and experience in areas I am passionate about. This focus means I can provide a greater level of expertise rather than spreading my skills thinly across so many areas.
I am passionate about assisting individuals (18 yrs old to older adults) with anxiety and trauma.
Whilst depression is often a reaction to life circumstances and I do definitely work with depression as well of course, if it is a severe or long standing depression there may be other psychologists who have focused their experience there more. I particularly love seeing clients overcome anxiety and trauma quickly once they understand why this is occurring and how the techniques I use work so quickly. Providing relief quickly from distress that has often been plaguing clients for so long is so rewarding and I feel honoured to be able to assist so quickly.
I am also passionate about assisting couples.
I assist clients with the best techniques to work as quickly as possible to turn their relationship around. I don’t believe in therapy taking months and months or even years as some couples therapy does. I believe it is imperative to turn relationships round as quickly as possible to avert the risk of being too little too late. Because I have focussed my skills here I am able to analyse the issues quickly and provide the solutions as efficiently as possible too. I am a realist however and sometimes it is about assisting clients to part on well. This is especially important for the way forward and the lessening the impact on the children in the family. If couples feel they are going to separate if they have couples counselling and it doesn’t work out, at least they can look back and say, they did the best they could and tried to turn their relationship around.
Child Psychologists – As part of couples therapy discipline is often a hot topic which we work through however if you feel the main issue is all about your child or childrens’ issues it would be best to seek this type of psychologist.
Family Therapy Psychologists – if you need relationship therapy with a family member other than your partner this is the best psychologist for you.
Criminal or Family Law Court Proceedings – If you are looking at criminal matters, DVO’s or court ordered therapy in order to have supervised visits or see your child for example, it is important to find a psychologist who can provide experience in this area and ability to represent in court. I do not do court appearances or provide expert witnessing. This type of psychologist is harder to find but put the right terms into your search.
Clinical Psychologists – They assist with more moderate to serious mental health issues such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Autism, Personality Disorders such as Borderline PD.
Forensic Psychologists – They assist with assessments for court and assisting with past or current criminal behaviours.
Substance Abuse issues – Whilst I assist with some alcohol issues I do not specialise in substance abuse such as marijuana, ICE or heroin for example. Other psychologists may focus here and there is also dedicated organisations which assist greatly such as ATODS or AODS.
Disabilities – With the NDIS now operating widely you will be able to find psychologist who focus their skills in this area too. They will be registered with NDIS for this service.
Please note: I do not offer any recommendations about psychologists in other speciality areas. Apart from the right search terms you can also look on the Australian Psychological Society website where you will find a searchable directory that should assist.
